If your little kids are anything like mine then they have been asking to paint their nails since they were only a few years old. With their fingers always in their mouths you do not want to paint their finger nails with something that could potentially harm them. Most nail polishes are full of chemicals that are terrible for all of us, think formaldehyde (a carcinogen that makes polish shine and chip resistant), biphenyl, acetone (keeps your nail polish in the liquid form), toluene (a neurological toxicant used to evenly distribute color), and dibutyl phthalate aka DBP which is a plasticizer used to make nail polish flexible. Note these have already been banned in the European Union because they are a reproductive toxicant. YIKES!
This definitely makes me ask the question, is any nail polish safe for kids? I wanted to find out the answer not only for my girls, but for other moms who might be curious if there really are safe nail polishes out there for their kids. While doing some research on the topic some of the most popular brands that came up are listed below. I ordered a few of them and we did a little wear test to see how they worked. I’ll break some of them down for you.

The Ella + Mila brand was created by a mom of twin girls. The Ella + Mila brand creates fashionable nail colors while being both ecofriendly and health conscious. I was very impressed with this nail polish and after researching the brand and ingredients I felt like it was safe for my kids! They are a 17 free brand and have a large range of colors as options for just $11 a bottle. As an added bonus, they offer a Mommy and Me package making them a great addition to your nail routine for you and your little ones. I am a big fan of the Ella + Mila polish for myself and love that I can also use it for my little girlfriends!

A brand our family is already familiar with is Piggy Paint. Piggy Paint was also founded by a mom of two who found herself looking for a safe nail polish for her daughters. Piggy Paint is a kid friendly, nontoxic, and cruelty free company with odorless water based nail polish. Although this is geared towards children, they also have another brand called SOPHi Nail Polish, which is marketed towards women as a health conscious, water based, vegan, and cruelty free polish. Me and my girls love doing our spa days together, aka painting our fingers and toes. Piggy Paint has become a staple brand in my girls manicure and pedicure routine.
Another company, founded by a mom (can you spot the trend?) is Suncoat nail polish. Suncoat is a water based, vegan nail polish made from minerals. The amazing thing about this nail polish is that you can peel it off, eliminating the need for a nail polish remover. That- is- amazing!
Keeki (do you love me?) Pure Simple Nail Polish is a vegan, nontoxic, and gluten free nail polish absent from the most harmful chemicals typically included in nail polish. Keeki is 100% Organic and free from parabens, bleaches, fragrances and dyes. They offer a full range of colors so you can create whichever color manicure your little loves desire.

I hope this information helps you to make healthier choices for your little ones and yourself! To all my ladies, if you haven’t checked out my The Best of The Best, 11 Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands post, you definitely need to, I break down some of the safer nail polish brands for you.
