A few years ago a friend of mine completely edited her closet and removed a vast majority of the clothing she owned leaving her with only the staples. By doing this she created a capsule collection as the foundation of her wardrobe moving forward. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of garments that can easily be styled and worn together to create a variety of looks with minimal pieces. The idea of a capsule collection was first coined in the 1940’s and represented a small collection of garments of similar colorings which could be worn together. This term again became a popular concept in the 1980’s when Donna Karan introduced her first line, Seven Easy Pieces, a collection of classic essentials for the modern working woman. By creating your own capsule wardrobe you free up space by reducing the number of pieces in your wardrobe, streamline and simplify your color palette, and reduce the time spent making decisions on what to wear, which frees up time to think about the important things in life. The best part about a capsule wardrobe is that you will often buy staple pieces that you can carry from season to season which helps save you money!
Must Have Shirts
Some essential tops that you can carry season to season is a great black and white tank, a t-shirt, and a great bodysuit! You can pair these tops with almost anything. I found my favorite tank at Nordstrom last summer and purchased in 3 colors. I love the U-neck shape of the neck and it’s such a soft fabric. A poplin shirt and a chambray shirt are also must have pieces in any wardrobe that can be worn year round. You can carry a button down over from season to season. Pair it with everything from leggings, jeans and dresses, or under your favorite sweater!
Spring Coats & Jackets
Here in New Jersey spring time weather can consist of 30 degrees in the mornings and 70 degrees in the afternoons, so it’s important to have the right layers to dress for the changing temperatures throughout the day. A good trench coat is a classic and stylish piece, that to me, elevates any outfit. A jean jacket is the perfect addition to more casual looks and I especially love throwing it on with a great maxi dress in the spring time. Another staple piece that you can keep in your wardrobe for years is a blazer. A good fitting blazer can make you look chic and sophisticated. I love a neutral color blazer or a light pastel if you are really feeling the spring color.
Springtime Sweaters
Another great springtime piece is a sweater you can use for the chillier days. I love cardigans as you can wear a cardigan so many ways. Dress it up with a blouse or pair it down with a tee or tank and a pair of jeans. I also think a pullover sweater is a great piece to have. Pair your sweaters with just about any style of pants or over your favorite dress. I love a sweater with texture or some sort of embroidery or embellishment to make it a little more interesting. A longer style open front cardigan is also a great piece to have on hand as its the perfect layering piece you can throw on top of just about any outfit, belt it for a cinched waist or wear it with a tee, jeans, and cute sneakers for a casual look. Recently I have been grabbing my sweatshirts to throw on for casual looks and I am very into the athleisure trend. A stylish and comfortable sweatshirt can take you from your weekend workout to brunch if you pair it with the right accessories.
Pants & Jeans
There are certain pants that I think are definite must haves in your wardrobe, many of which you can wear throughout multiple seasons. I think every woman must have great fitting jeans, A light color, a darker denim, and a white for spring and summer. I also love a fun distressed pair for more casual look. I love a great pair of joggers for a casual and relaxed look. For me my mom uniform often consists of joggers and a cute sweater or t-shirt for my playground dates.
Spring Dresses & Rompers
A must have piece for springtime is a fun and flirty dress! I also love a t-shirt dress and a tiered maxi you can carry from spring to summer. I have always loved jumpsuits and there are so many cute ones to choose from right now!
Shoes & Sandals
I love a light colored sneaker for spring as well as a neutral colored flat. A block healed sandal looks great with dresses and a flat sandal is a must! All of which you can carry into summer.
Last but not least remember that you might already have many of these pieces in your closet and could create a capsule wardrobe with minimal purchases. I challenge you to simplify your wardrobe while simplifying your life.
