Now this is a hard one for me to share. The recipe I am about to divulge is my Best Ever Sugar Cookie Recipe. Ever since I started baking these cookies years ago, people have been asking for my secrets! If you are reading this, you are one of the lucky ones and I guess it’s no longer a secret. The recipe makes perfectly sweet and soft cookies, great for holidays, birthdays, and more. Given my interest in all things Simple and Sweet, my husband gifted me cookie cutters and festive rolling pins for Christmas a few years ago. I went to work, trying recipe after recipe, only to have the dough come out too sticky or the cookies come out too hard. Finally, after making some tweaks and adding an ingredient or two I arrived at this original and spectacular recipe. These cookies are perfect by themselves or topped off with some icing and sprinkles. We now make these cookies for every holiday and birthday. Warning you now, it’s hard to eat just one!!
Ingredients:
- 3 cups of flour
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspooon salt
- 1 cup unsalted softened butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 3 teaspoon vanilla
- powder sugar for rolling
Instructions:
Step 1: Sift together flour, baking powder and salt then set aside
Step 2: In a separate large bowl combine butter and sugar and beat until light in color
Step 3: Add in the egg, milk and vanilla to the sugar and beat to combine
Step 4: Gradually add flour and beat mixture until it pulls from the side of the bowl
Step 5: THIS IS IMPORTANT- Refrigerate dough for 2 hours
Step 6: Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Step 7: Take dough out of the fridge and spread powder sugar on rolling surface
Step 8: Knead the dough in the powder sugar to soften- do not soften too much or the dough will become sticky
Step 9: Use a rolling pin- to roll out the dough, I like to roll until its about 1/8″ – 1/4″ thick
Step 10: Use your favorite cookie cutters, (I am a big fan of these stainless steel cookie cutters) or a glass to cut out your cookies
Step 11: Place them on the cookie sheet, I love to use the Silpat Half-Sheet Liner which ensures your cookies do not stick to the cookie sheet
Step 12: Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes
Step 13: Let them cool for 15 mins
Step 14: Top with your favorite icing or sprinkles (they are super delicious just by themselves too!!)
Step 15: Eat and enjoy these Simple & Sweet Sugar Cookies!!
